Early Assessment Program

Each spring, all 11th-graders take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments - two tests that assess students for college-level readiness in English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics.

Administered as part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System, these tests are used by the California State University (CSU) and participating California Community Colleges (CCCs) to determine math/English placement at the college level.

Students must authorize the release of their results to the Cal State and community college systems, and these results do not affect a student’s chances for admission.

Each student’s Early Assessment Program (EAP) status can be found on the front of the 2017–18 Student Score Report. There are four possible EAP status levels:

Ready: All students who achieve standard exceeded/level 4 may register for college-level English and/or mathematics.

Conditionally Ready: All students who receive standard met/level 3 must receive a grade of “C-” or better in an approved 12th grade English and/or mathematics course. If they do not meet this 12th grade requirement, they may have to enroll in the CSU’s Early Start Program (ESP) or in supported baccalaureate courses.

Not Yet Ready: Students who receive standard nearly met/level 2 will be placed in the in the CSU’s Early Start Program (ESP) or in supported baccalaureate courses unless they meet the exemption criteria through another pathway.

Not Ready:  Students who receive standard not met/level 1 are considered not ready for English and/or mathematics college-level coursework. They will also be placed in the CSU’s Early Start Program (ESP) or in supported baccalaureate courses unless they meet the exemption criteria through another pathway.
