Eleven CIMS students were crowned champions at the 29th annual San Bernardino County History Day awards ceremony held at Summit High School on March 9.

About 350 students competed in the event, and the individual/group qualifiers now advance to the California History Day competition in May in Rocklin.

This year’s theme was “Triumph and Tragedy In History.” There were three divisions with both individual and group competitions: Elementary (Grades 4-5), Junior (Grades 6-8) and Senior (Grades 9-12). 

History Day gives students a chance to compete in a variety of categories on a historical theme. The Elementary Division only has one category of competition, posters. The Junior and Senior divisions compete in exhibit, documentary, performance, website and research paper categories.

San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and Summit High School in the Fontana Unified School District sponsored the event. Following are our school’s San Bernardino County 2019 History Day Champions:

Junior Division Historical Paper, Individuals: Ariana Solis, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "Haymarket Riots: Labor's Tragedy."

Junior Division Website, Individuals:  Nataly Rezk, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "N.O.W. - The National Organization for Women."

Junior Division Website, Groups:

Megan Metzler and Hailey Rowan, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "Endeavor's Final Launch."

Patrise Rindon and Liliana Roybal, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "Loving vs. Virginia."

Senior Division Website, Groups:
Alex Morgan, Michael Nguyen and Karam Shanti, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "Pearl Harbor."

Frank Song and Noah Stephenson, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science. "Japanese American Soldiers of WWII."

A further 6 projects were honored at the County level, but will not be moving on.

Senior Division Paper: MacKenzie Alridge 2nd runner-up

Senior Individual Documentary: Jhon Cedric Balthazar

Junior Individual Website: Kaylea Ausman 2nd runner up; Scarlet Williams 1st runner-up.

Junior Group Website: Xzavior Brown, Takai Myers, Christian Villalobos, and Savannah Landon, 1st runner-up

Senior Individual Website: Caleb Putney 1st runner-up

Congratulations to all of these students for their hard work and dedication! It paid off!
