High school students - did you miss out on the presentation from University of California, Davis today? Most people think of UC Davis as the Sacramento-area school where people go who want to become veterinarians. But if you talk to someone who was at the presentation yesterday, they can tell you that we learned a lot of other neat information about the university, as well. For example, did you know that UC Davis is ranked #1 in the world for Women in STEM? The campus is also ranked #1 in the world for sustainability and is considered a "green" campus for the great concern and dedication its students and staff show for the environment. In addition, UC Davis is ranked 10th Happiest School in the United States. With over 100 majors to choose from, 800 clubs to get involved with, and a full list of NCAA Division 1 sports, maybe UC Davis is the college for you. What does it take to get in? A GPA of 3.9 and an SAT score over 1200. If you'd like more information, stop by the Counseling Office and pick up a brochure. And don't miss out on our next college event: a visit with a UC Merced admissions rep on Friday, September 22nd. Sign up sheet is in the Counseling Office.

Federalism Cake Day at CIMS
09/01/2017
Mrs. Rand’s AP Government class celebrated “Cake Day” on Sept. 1 by sharing a variety of delicious marble and layer cakes with teachers and staff. You might be wondering….what does cake have to do with government? It’s actually a great example of the different types of federalism. According to Rand, “the marble (swirly) cake signifies cooperative federalism, where the powers are not divided, but are shared by all levels of government. The layer cake represents duel federalism. The different layers symbolize the distinct, different powers the states' government and the national government have.”

Mrs. Ehart's Human Body Systems students worked with colored clays and wire tools this morning to bring a classroom of Manikens® to life. The project gave students a hands-on lesson about different types of body tissues – epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous – and how these tissues contribute to the human body’s framework. Working with red clay, students watched a short video and then began crafting their temporalis (temporal muscle), carefully etching in fine details. Some of the questions students were required to answer included: How does the distribution of tissues contribute to our appearance and our identity? What specific motions would you not be able to complete if you damaged your temporalis, orbicularis oculi or the orbicularis oris?

On May 15, Mr. Patterson's physics and aerospace engineering students traveled to the San Diego Air and Space Museum for a field trip on the history of flight. Each gallery is divided into different time periods, starting with Early Flight (with reproductions of the Leonardo Da Vinci Ornithopter), 1901 Wright Glider and the Montoflier Balloon), followed by the World War I Gallery, Golden Age of Flight Gallery (famous for its barnstormers and Airmail pilots), World War II Gallery Home to the Flying Tigers), and the Modern Jet & Space Age Gallery, with displays of the Douglas A-4B Skyhawk and Boeing GPS-12 Satellite. A highlight was a special exhibition titled "Be the Astronaut," in which students learned about the concepts and challenges of space flight through the use of touch-screen stations, artifacts and interactive simulator pods. As their assignment, each student was expected to take notes and report on their three different aircraft at the museum. After enjoying the museum, students lunched in Balboa Park - San Diego's world-class museum complex that once hosted the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Highlights for students included the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Japanese Friendship Garden, Botanical Building and Lily Pond, and the grand Spanish-Renaissance architecture of the buildings.
